This track by Depeche Mode’s Martin L. Gore is a masterpiece. A masterpiece off complex emotions, filled with angst, longing and hope. The first time i heard this track was from a LIVE album and i fell in love with the song instantly. I just love the way Martin sings it and i think that the raw emotion that he has in his voice wouldn’t make it sound the same if it was David Gahan who sang it instead.
The track also (again) shows of the skills of Martin L. Gore’s lyrics. Yet another example of his emotional writing. A master at work!
Well I’m down on my knees again
And I pray to the only one
Who has the strength
To bear the pain
To forgive all the things that I’ve doneOh Girl
Lead me into your darkness
When this world is trying it’s hardest
To leave me unimpressed
Just one caress
From you and I’m blessedWhen you think you’ve tried every road
Every avenue
Take one more look
At what you found old
And in it you’ll find something newI’m shying from the light
I always loved the night
And now you offer me eternal darknessI have to believe that sin
Can make a better man
It’s the mood that I am in
That left us back where we began

Masterpiece is a big word , but so easy to feel the lyrics and find a meaning with this great Gore piece , overall a wonderful, wonderful piece and Songs of Faith and Devotion would not be the best DM (Gore) effort ever without it for me .
