A few times in ones lifetime you come across a song that you can relate to and make you feel things, even if you don’t understand it’s lyrics. Myléne Farmer did just that on the 1991 album “L’Autre” and with the song “Desenchantée”. Apart from a great song it also comes with a great video, or rightfully, a movie.
The video is about 2 minutes longer than the actual track released on the album, but it does not matter. It’s just great. I’ve also added a LIVE version of the track from the Mylyenium Tour. I have enclosed the English translation of the lyrics below so that everyone can understand what Myléne is singing.
One thing that is interesting with the song is that it is considered one of the most important songs ever released in France, striking a universal chord with the political and social dissatisfaction of many of the citizens of France.
Kate Ryan did a cover of the song, however i do not really like that version, but hey, it’s my opinion.
Lyrics - Desenchantée (in French) :
Nager dans les eaux troubles
Des lendemains
Attendre ici la fin
Flotter dans l’air trop lourd
Du presque rien
A qui tendre la mainSi je dois tomber de haut
Que ma chute soit lente
Je n’ai trouvé de repos
Que dans l’indifférence
Pourtant, je voudrais retrouver l’innocence
Mais rien n’a de sens, et rien ne vaTout est chaos
A côté
Tous mes idéaux : des mots
Abimés…
Je cherche une âme, qui
Pourra m’aider
To swim in turbid water
Following days
To await the end here
To float in the too heavy air
Almost nothing
With which to tighten the handIf I must fall from top
That my fall is slow
I do not have find rest
That in the indifference
However, I would like to find innocence
But nothing has direction, and nothing goesAll is chaos
With dimension
All my ideals: words
Damaged…
I seek a heart, which
Will be able to help me
I am
Of a desenchantée generation,
DesenchantéeWho could to me impeacher
All to hear
When the reason breaks down
With which centre to dedicate itself
Who can claim
Us to rock in his bellyIf death is a mystery
The life does not have anything to tend
If the sky has a hell
The sky can await me well
Say me,
In these head winds how to be caught there
Nothing any more has direction, plus nothing does not goAll is chaos
With dimension
All my ideals: words
Damaged…
I seek a heart, which
Will be able to help me
I am
Of a desenchantée generation,
Desenchantée
Click PLAY to listen and see the video (movie), it’s 8min long, but the magic begins around 1.30min into the clip :
Here is a live version of the same song, but it’s orchestrated differently, but it’s still as good as the album version :

I really do love this song, like you. Its melody as well as its lyrics are simply magical. Here is a translation which I’ve just done myself.
To swim in turbid waters
Of the coming days
To wait here for the end
To float in the oppressive air
Of almost nothing
Whose hand is there to hold?
If I must fall from high up
May my fall be slow
I have found no peace
Except in indifference
However, I want to rediscover innocence
But nothing has any meaning, and nothing goes well
Everything is chaos
Around me
All of my ideals: spoiled
Words
I seek a soul which
Can help me
I’m part of a disillusioned generation,
Disillusioned
Who could prevent me
From hearing everything
When reason is collapsing?
To which breast does one pledge oneself
That can pretend
To soothe us in its stomach?
If death is a mystery
Life has nothing tender
If the sky has a hell
The sky can then wait for me
Tell me
In these opposing winds, how does one go about doing it?
Nothing more has any meaning, nothing more goes well
Everything is chaos
Around me
All of my ideals: spoiled
Words
I seek a soul which
Can help me
I’m part of a disillusioned generation,
Disillusioned
